Water leaking from outboard

I have a 15 hp Evinrude dated 1984 and have noticed water drizzling from the lower unit as I am testing the motor in a can of water. I put the water level above the water intake and as the engine is running, the pee hole is working fine, but there is also a continuous drizzle of water coming from about an inch or so above the seam where the water pump is. What can I do?

Is this motor "new to you" or you have not seen this leak in the past? Sounds normal to me. Water leaks from weep holes, draining the area between the inner and outer housings.

Re: Water leaking from outboard

I have had the boat some time now. But, usually when I run the engine out of water, I fill the can all the way covering most of the lower unit. This recent time, I only filled to above the water intake so I could see if I had any lower unit lube leaking. No oil was leaking and I even checked my lower unit oil to see if it was milky, but it looked great. But, I noticed this trickle of water about an inch above the seam where the water pump is and it concerned me. Maybe I have just never noticed it before. So, is it normal for water to trickle from another place besides the pee hole? The engine is running great, and the pee hole is working fine. Oh, btw, what is a good way to clean out the pee hole?

Chances are it has always had water trickling out of this area. If its not overheating, I would not worry.

To clean out the tell tail orifice, I use a piece of weed trimmer line. Sometimes the clog will be further up the hose or even the plastic elbow that scews into the engine block.
