How do I keep water out of my stern drive oil? The stern drive in question is a Mercrusier from a 1973 Century Raven. At the end of every summer I have water in the oil. It used to look milky but I had it rebuilt Now the oil looks good but it still has water in the oil based on the crackle test. I've been doing the crackle test for years but here's a new way: http://wp.me/p674Dk-2l

I'm thinking that as the oil heats up the air inside the sealed case heats up and escapes. As it cools a vacuum forms and pulls water in from one of the seals. Can I vent the gear case somehow? or what?

Hey Dalow welcome aboard!

I dunno..but we can glass that sucker clean tight over here in the "dry dock" area of Iboats. Or if your transom is rotted .. then we the dudes to come to.

Might want to slap this question in one of the engine forums..probably get a few good mechs to ponder your quandary :)

Good luck man.
