Please help.
I have had this problem for about 2 years now. I have a 1983 75hp Evinrude 75TRLCTE outboard. The motor starts up fine, floods easy. The motor idles fine. At top speed it sounds very healthy and runs great. The transition from idle to top throttle there is a hesitation. Sometimes it will kill the motor. If I bump the choke button on the ignition key in mid throttle the motor comes to life and revise up and goes. This last weekend I had it on the water and the motor was at top throttle running great for several miles and then it started to run really rough and it died. It did not start again. I brought it home and removed the spark plugs to do a compression test and a water mist came out #2 and #3 cylinder. I remove the power head and found the gasket to be in good shape. There was a lot of water in the two cylinders. I removed the exhaust cover, gaskets and plates. The gaskets seemed to be okay. No sign of obvious leaks. There was a lot of water in side, thou. When cleaning the power head and the exhaust covers I found both where warped. The power head and the exhaust covers all rocked back and forth on a glass surface. I think this might be my problem? Is there any suggestion or ideas to what this problem might be? Can I have the power head and exhaust plates machined to flat again? I did just replace the entire fuel system. Cleaned carbs., new fuel filter and pump, new tanks, new fuel lines, etc.

You may be able to have a machine shop deck the exhaust cover face. Just replace the exhaust cover. The 3 cyl model was very popular and no doubt there are many of these in marine salvage yards. By any chance did you check the head gasket?

Unfortunately, this is a pretty common problem on the 3 cylinder motors of that era.....

Re: water in the cylinders

I have to work today. But when I get home tonight I will check the head gasket. I'm going to check with some local machine shops about the power head. I am going to order a new exhaust cover. The other two exhaust plates are obsolete to order. I will see if I can't find replacements in a salvage yard. When I inspected the covers and block I could not see any obvious cracks. Compression was good before I started working on it. Any last suggestions of help? Looks like the owner of the motor before me over heated the motor.
