Hi,
I have bought a cheap outboard here in the Netherlands. An evinrude 6 Hp single cylinder 4 stroke from 1999. This type:
Previous owner stated that it had overheated and that it started to lose oil somewhere around the powerhead.
He also mentioned that he opened the removed the cylinder head but couldn't find anything wrong and placed it back. ( due to the oil leak) Than it sat for well over a year
He did not come over as the most technical guy but I saw that the head was removed due to the paint being chipped at the gasket.
I got the engine running and traced the leak back to an o-ring at the oil filter on the right side of the engine. I removed the filter and saw that there was a lot of sludge on the filter. Cleaned it up, put on a new O- ring and drained the old oil and replaced it with new.
The thermostat was missing so replaced that as well.
The motor ran fine and also cooled oke-ish. After half an hour it had a weak stream so that would explain why it could overheat. I hoped that running the engine for a long time would allow the water to evaporate but there was still a lot of water in the oil. So I am thinking it does have a leak somewhere.
Now for the advice part. What would be the best thing for me to do? I can imagine that overheating might cause the head gasket to fail. But there might be other places where water might come in the oil.
If you look at the underside of the cylinder head, the water is pumped up next to the exhaust tube ( or is it where the water leaves again?)
Might there be other gaskets where it is possible for water to get in the oil?
These are from a power head & cylinder head. There are two round holes in the bottom, are those both for oil or one oil and 1 water?
Where would you guys advise me to look first? Pull the cylinder head? Pull the entire powerhead?
Or maybe do some more oil changes and see?
One thing possible in my mind is that the head gasket started leaking water after the head was pulled, he probably just used the old gasket.
