Re: Water in no. 1 cylinder 50hp Merc 4 cyl.

Finally got the cover thingy off. Not a pleasing sight. I was unable to actually see any holes however it appears to have been "repaired" using an epoxy type product, I think you blokes call it JB Weld, around the plug thread on no 1 and no 2 has what is becoming a hole. The pitting is pretty bad and I would post a pic if I knew how. I reckon this calls for a new block but I'm not sure I have the skill level required for a task of this magnitude. Thank you djohns19, omctech , steve 2 and schematic. Your beers are waiting in the esky but I think I might drink 'em and tell you how refreshing they were.

After careful reflection (read 3 beers) I am confident I can replace a block. 12 months ago I couldn't change an impeller, let alone diagnose the above faults. Will I have any hope of finding a new unit or will I need to scour the wreckers ? What should I be looking at when examining used ones ? If I don't attempt this I'll never know. Off to bury my head in the manual.

Tx steve 2, there doesn't seem to much to strip as you suggest so if I prepare for this I think I can do it in a day. After half a slab I decided to see what would happen if I covered the mess with an epoxy product, the decision has been made to replace the block so why not experiment ? Compression came up and no water coming out when running but the effectiveness of this type of bodgie must be questionable. I'll be on the prowl for a block tomorrow when I get back to work.

Hi woywoyboy,
I have been reading with interest the many comments about your engine. I to have found a small hole in No3 expansion chamber and am in the proccess of having it welded. I have noted that you have used an epoxy as an experiment and am curious as to what it is called. Ihave heard mention of a JB weld?.
Could that be what you are using? and is it available in Australia. Good luck with your repairs mate. I will keep an eye on this site to see how you get on.

Garry
Hobart

The "trick" to welding aluminum is making sure the base metal (existing metal) is extremely clean. Although you can't tell it, aluminum begins to oxidize within minutes of cleaning / wire brushing.

Find an aluminum welder, and make sure he cleans the base metal with a stainless steel wire brush and acetone cleaner - minutes before he is ready to weld.

Gold Bear (AWS/ CWI)
Good Luck!! ;)

Rusta, the stuff I use is called Knead It, made by Selleys. I love ths stuff but understand it isn't going to satisfactorily repair the block for me. http://www.selleys.com.au/products/general/index.htm
Hope you enjoyed your days at Holsworthy as the word is Defence are going to sell the land to a developer.

Good news. The my favourite wrecker has a few of them and will let me have a 94' which he says is perfect and will charge me a monkey (1 monkey = $500, 1 Gorilla = $1000 or 2 Monkeys). He tells me they are all the same up to abt 94'. Can anybody confirm this please ?

The task of replacing the block was becoming more Herculean than I could manage so I have entrusted a local mechanic to do the labour for 10 units of backyard currency (1 unit = 1 slab)plus parts at retail from his employing workshop - sweet for him as he likes beer and sweet for me with no GST and I'm sure we'll have a drink together. He checkd out the block from the wreckers and reckons it's a beauty. It's hard to be off the water when it's directly across the street and I am getting excited. I even went for a run in my tinnie this morning I was that frustrated. (tinnie = 12ft De Havilland Topper+ '78 9.9 Johnno + torture poles.

Woywoyboy, hope your wrench gets you back on the water soon. Just give him the slabs after he does the work, not during! :D And by the way, if there is a trade current that reaches from down under to Alaska, can you chuck a few 'oil cans' of Foster's in for me? All we get anymore is the cheap-o aluminum cans from a brewery in Canada. It just ain't the same.... :(

Hi Schem, the Croc Hunter? Well, he can be described as umm, well crikey he's an angry bugger. He doesn't like being picked up at all ! Ohh look what happens when I swing him around and aggrivate him ! Ohh crikey ! He's cranky !

FP, there's plenty of refreshment just waiting here for you but the trade winds have been blowing the wrong way lately. Perhaps you should try brewing your own - I am trying my first batch at the moment and crikey, not too bad for a first attempt but reckon I'll be a tad crook in the morning.

The motor was completed abt 8 weeks ago and I got an offer on the boat too good to refuse so off it went and I upgraded to an International Marine designed but Aust built 20ft cabinb cruiser with a 170hp Volvo Penta. Beaut clean leg but got a couple of little things to sort out with the motor.

www.fishingwiththeboys.50megs.com
