My 1980 4 cyl Merc has water shooting from no 1 cyl when I remove the plug when she is running. I have replaced gaskets on water jacket/exhaust side still same prob. She will start and run but not idle correctly or reach full power. I know it is water because I can stand behind it with my hand over the cylinder and feel the pressure whilst getting very wet. This is my 2nd Merc (different models and hp) this has happened to in the last 6 months and it is giving the grog monster a foothold.
What should I look at next ?

WWB,

Look at the post from Grizzly on this page. I think you're in the same boat.

Take a compression test on #1. It will probably come back 0 lbs. I have had several early eighties 4 cyl. mercs brought to me that had a hole in the top of the combustion chamber, allowing water to enter. A good machine shop can weld it closed and smooth it out, but probably cheaper, and definitely easier to go with a remanufactured powerhead.

Tx omctech. It is shooting water for abt 10 ft from the cyl and if I try to block the hole it blows my hand away and feels like a real lot of compression. Should I still hire a compression guage to check this or look at something else ? If has a hole in the combustion chamber as you suggest she's a gonna be scrapped.

A thought has just struck me, if water is only coming from no 1 ( the top cyl), would that not preclude the crank seals ? Why would it not affect all cyl's ?

Go with Omctech,it will be a hole in the compression chamber,Allowing water in,then been compressed by no 1 cylinder. This was also a problem with 3-cylinder 65 h.ps,Due to the additives in marine engine alloy it is hard for this to be welded.

For gods sake man....don't pitch the motor for just a little hole!!! I admit it may be harder to weld than clean aluminum, thats why they make aluminum stick electrodes. Get some old stick welder to tack a small bead over hole. It'll outlast you. I wouldn't even pull the engine apart except for the water jacket cover. What do you have to lose?

If you keep threatening to scrap it, I'll come over there and weld it myself!!....LOL

Ahh beauty ! schematic's here ! I had the jacket off yesterday but was unable to see any holes. Should I remove the cover thingo which the plugs srcew into and have a sticky beak in there ? (sorry re the description but the manuals out in the shed). I have decided that this thing will be fixable but just have to locate the fault now.

Remove the Cover thingo, there you will see the tops of combustion chambers, and maybe a hole.have a try at welding, but a sure way would be to get a good used block, there are plenty about.all the best Steve.

Tx schematic. I like it when your about. I've one last difficult bolt to remove so I'll have a beer while waiting for the WD40 ( yes the highly flammable stuff as made in Aust.) to soak and when I get it out I'll have one for you.

Wipper
I haven't tried it in an engine yet, but it does say Extremely Flammable on it, which is a good sign!!! I bought six cans anyway.....cheap at that price....if it don't burn, it'll keep my lathe bed happy...
