Thanks to all of you for your help with my previous issues. My '61 Evinrude 40hp outboard seems to have gotten water in the lower end after one very short test running. This seems like a very bad harbinger... Is there a chance it could be a more simple fix than complete resealing...?

The complete resealing is the simple fix. If it was less than 10 years old you might look at the seal behind the prop. But 50 years can harden everything.

Hope it is not due to wear.

+1. A reseal job is probably in order. It's not that bad really. You should be able to get a reseal kit right here at iboats for about $25. You'll also need a seal puller ($10) and some 3M 847 gasket sealat, which you usually have to order. Although, I believe Grainger's carries it, if you have one near by. Here's a link that can walk you through a basic lower unit reseal job.

Do the drain and vent bolts on the gearcase have the little nylon washer in place? That may be your only problem.

Best thing to do is have it pressure tested. That will take the guess work out of where it's leaking.

Thanks all for the help. No washers on bolts. I was thinking about resealing lower end. Looks basic enough. I have experience with car and motorcycle engines so...Wish me luck.
Thanks again.

Try replacing the washers. You might get lucky and have a $2 fix, if that doesn't do it you can always reseal it. May as well the simplest thing first.

+1. That's all that was wrong with my 47-year-old outboard. The washers for the drain and vent screws are probably there, they are probably just stuck up inside the recess where the screws go. You'll need a small screwdriver or a pick to pull them out. Regardless how they look, REPLACE them with new and try it again. If there really are no washers there at all, then this is most certainly your problem. Good luck.
