I've just bought a 1979 Evinrude 25 and when I first ran it I noticed alot of black oil in the water. I checked the gear case oil by unscrewing the bottom plug and slowly releasing the top plug and all that drained out was clear water. What does this mean?

Re: Water in gear case

It means you have at least one bad seal in the lower unit. It could be the prop seal, driveshaft seal, shift shaft seal, or any combination thereof. It could also have been caused by nothing more than the gaskets on the fill/vent screws.
Since you just bought this engine, it would be adviseable to drop the lower unit anyway (you would have to do this to install seals),and replace the impeller.

To find the culprit seal, use iether the fill or vent screw holes, and charge the lower unit with no more than 10PSI of air,and submerge the l/u in a trash can. Where you see bubbles, you have a bad seal.
It would also be prudent to get the shop manual for your motor before starting the removal job. It will pay for itself in time savings, back trouble and cussin.
