water impeller replacement

hi yall, new to site,but seenms cool! i have a 98 40 hp evinrude that i need to replace water pump[impeller] on,never done this.have always gone to shop,but now i'm on ssd and can't afford thier $. is there any suggestions or tips that might make this easier for me.been told drop the lower part of my unit and it's a piece of cake!! not so sure. anyway any and all help will be excepted and gratefully accepted. thanks tony!!

Welcome Tony!

A great way to save some $$$ is to do your own maintenance. Before you start I recommend that you get a copy of the OMC Service manual for your engine. It will more than pay for itself in your first service. Many libraries also have outboard service manuals in the reference section.

And I would replace the entire water pump not just the impeller. They are easy to do if you have basic knowledge of tools.
