water flow question

Just recently bought a 22' Macgregor sailboat that came with a 85 Johnson sailmaster 8 outboard. I am relatively new to boating and outboard engines so please excuse my ignorance. Put the engine in a tank & got her running with a little cleaning of the carb but noticed there appearred to be no exhaust in the tank. no water exhaust or engine exhaust? there was a stream coming from the indicator at lower back of the engine and engine exhaust from the exhaust relief(?) as labeled on the manual. but nothing in the tank?
any help opinions or observances will be appreciated

Well the exhaust has to go somewhere. Most of the exhaust likely came out exhaust relief, as you were not moving forward to pull exhaust out of prop area. Water was being discharged near the prop, but it is hard to see.

I felt in the tank around the prop shaft (the prop was removed) and felt no kind of exhaust no movement in the tank or any kind of agitation...this is normal???

ok guys what did I do wrong?
I know there at least 1 person in the 143 people that viewed my post that could answer my question but no one has?

you did nothing wrong in your post. jmo, since the motor is a longshaft?or extra long, it probably was submerged enough in the barrel to create enough backpressure in the midsection to allow all the exhaust ( or most of it) to exit through the upper relief.

Maybe the thermostat never opened. That would simply recirculate the water with minimal discharge.
