Water Flow Problem

I have replaced my impellar and I am still not getting any water from the telltale hole at idle. It is a 1972 115hp Mercury. When the lower unit was off I shot compressed air up the water tube, but I didn't fell anything at the telltale hole. I am starting to think that there might be something blocking the water flow, but I am not sure which are the hoses in the engine compartment that are used for water. What if the blockage is in the heads somewhere. Would I have to tear the engine completely apart. Thanks.

Yes, there could be a blockage in the engine. But let's not go there just yet.
There is a hose comming out of the top of the head, and going down the starboard side of the engine, to a fitting that goes thru the cowl's bottom.
Remove it, and make sure it is open. Then, where this hose leaves the head, there is a flange bolted on with two screws. There is a thermostat under this "flange". Remove and replace it with a new one.
I got my fingers crossed.

I will give this a try tomoorow. Also something maybe I should have added. When I ran the motor with the earmuffs on water was coming out of the prop and the vents above the lower unit.Is this normal or should I be concerned. Thanks.

Re: Water Flow Problem

boatyt72..try a shot of air right up the telltale hole, if not working, then you will have to pull the hose off it inside the cowling and try again....the other end of this hose goes to the bottom of the exhaust cover and is difficult to get to, so dont pull it off....if all this is no help, then the motor will have to be lifted to clear out the water jackets, not a good idea on an engine this old.....I do believe you are pumping water, otherwise you would not get any out the exhaust reliefs.

Re: Water Flow Problem

I finally have water coming from the telltale. It doesn't appear to me to be a steady stream. It seems that the water is supptering out at idle and I believe the same with a little throttle given. I do have an issue with water in the lower unit when running with just earmuffs. I have this issue in another posting. Thanks.
