BWS, the valve stem trick is to pressure test the gearcase. You really will want to do that test when you replace the washers on the drain and fill holes.

Yeah Jim I understand that. I just figured I would try replacing the washers and making sure they are nice and tight before I messed with the lower unit. I hate the thought of pulling it back off. Of course I guess practice makes perfect and I really should do a proper pressure test.<br /><br />Does it matter weather I screw the valve stem in the drain hole or the vent hole? And also is the seal thats created there good enough to keep air from leaking right there at the valve stem?

I guess it doesn't really matter which of the holes you use. I use the bottom hole. When you have put pressure in the gearcase, drop it in a tub of water and look for bubbles. That will tell you if you have a good seal as well as where any leaks may be elsewhere.
