Water doesn't suck up through intake

I have been messing around with this boat I might be buying. I ran it a couple of months ago with the garden host hooked up to a motor flusher. Water ran through motor and outdrive fine I thought. <br /><br />Today I tried to run antifreeze from a bucket (no pressure) and it wouldn't draw it from the bucket. Is the impeller bad or what else could I look at?

It could be the impeller or thermostat.<br />On my Force, it's the other way around...<br />I can't get it to seal good enough on the muffs, so I have to run it in a garbage can to flush it.

This is an I/O? If so may have bad manifolds and risers.

run it off the hose again. if water comes out the exhaust let it warm up till the thermostat opens. than suck up the af from the bucket. the stat must be open so the mixture circulates through the whole motor. if no water comes out the exhaust check impeller.

Yes, I am working with an I/O Mercruiser Alpha I outdrive. Like I said, when hooked up to the hose it seemed to pump out through the outdrive. When I tried to suck antifreeze into the outdrive, it didn't want too. I was afraid of overheating the block - I just poured the anti-freeze into the hose off of the water pump. BTW does an inboard have a water pump, and if so what function does it serve, afterall if in impeller has to draw water up into the motor, what function does the water pump serve as?

You are not getting the pressure of the hose to help pull it in. I've tried doing it that way before, it just dont work well. spend a few bucks, get smallest trashcan that will fit under your drive, and do it that way. I use the pink stuff, it's cheaper, also make sure motor is hot.
