wasted floor space?

I have a 74 thunderbird and I knowtice that the floor is rased. I would love to put an Ice Chest in the floor but would like to know if I will mess anything up if I start cutting and doing this. Here is a picture of the boat I am reffering.

a friend of mine has his battery box partially sunk into his flooring. all depends on the boat.
