Re: Washington D.C. by boat

I'm actually moving to FT Belvoir (near MT Vernon) this fall and I can't wait to take my boat out up there. Thanks for post all those great pics and tips!

You did all that in one day?

Should have been two or three.

I was born in Washington DC and lived the first 40 years of my live within five miles of the DC/MD line. Next 20 years about 30 miles from the line. Then I moved to where I don't have to shovel snow.

Strange as it may seem, I never visited the monuments as an adult. I remember my parents taking us to the monuments and museums when we were children. Long enough ago that you just got in line and went into the Washington Monument. We even walked up and down the stairs (youth!).

Two things to add to the thread:

1. Gravelly point boat ramp is also a park where non-boaters bring their children to run around and watch the airplanes. The children will run behind you as you are backing your trailer (if you even found a place to park it). Also, unless it's changed, you can only enter the park from the northbound side of the parkway so if you're heading there from the north, you have to tow your boat and trailer through the airport and back out. There's some very shallow water between the ramp and the channel.

2. Unless they?ve changed it (and I doubt it), Washington DC requires that you have a valid boater education completion certificate in your possession while boating in DC waters (above the Wilson Bridge, even if you're not required to have one in your home state. No reciprocity here. Once I became aware of that, I didn't go back, I just boated in MD.

Anyway, glad you had a good trip and nice photos. I think I walked that marina once.

Yeah, I would have loved to stayed overnight but my bowrider isn't exactly set up for overnighting yet. (Especially with 4 people!)

We had a great time even though it was a long day and are glad that we did it.

I make trips up there pretty regularly. I launch from Pohick Bay near Ft Belvoir. A short 30-40 min trip to the bridge and I know that long No Wake Zone you are talking about through Alexandria. You just Bake on a hot day with no wind.

Last time I was up that way I docked at National Harbor. $10 for 4 hours, had lunch walked around to see the shops and then back out on the water.

To get to Georgetown there is another No Wake Zone near there, not quite as long as the one near Alexandria but will still bake on a hot day.

Next time I head up that way I'll probably dock at Alexandria Marina and walk around there for a while.

When I left the area, National Harbor was a swamp.

I have to say the pictures are great, as I am planning on the same trip as I come up the ICW. I will book mark this page as they will help me in knowing the slow wake less areas are.
I am making the trip in a 1972 Esenada sailboat that I will be living on for the next 4 or 5 years.
Thanks for the pics, Rick :)
