Was on the water today running about 40 and all of sudden the rpms dropped to about 2000 and I couldn't get the boat past 20. Could it be a fouled plug or? It was all of sudden and the motor ran great all day. Running 50:1 91 octane and quicksilver oil. Any ideas would be appreciated.

You know that's really awkward because i too was on the lake when my engine did the same thing.
I put the boat in the water and started right away, but as i started accelerating my engine lost power about half just like your talking about. i also use 50:1 mixture and i must have been at about 20 MPH when it did that.
Its a Johnson 50 Hp 1975. like the colleague says any feed back would be much appreciated and thank you all for you time.
first thing tomorrow ill be checking for spark maybe a coil went bad ???

OK gentlemen so after working on the engine I found that i have more spark than a storm in Arizona and the the gas pump is also working correctly.
I got the engine running again and it sounds fine also when revved up no problems all i did was keep in turning the key till it finally turned on also added a little bit of ignition fluid. After turning on i kept it on for about 30 min with no problems
I'm worried of going out to the lake and it dying on me again.
please give some feed back thank you

Glad u got her running again Urbina. I checked everything visible on mine today and all the linkages and cables r all good and connected. After some thought, when my problem happened it was getting low on fuel. I will clean the filter out and put some gas in it and try it out this week. But just worried its something more. We shall see and I will post the results aftrrwards.

Sounds to me like you should check your compression then go from there.

I checked my compression and it also good

Have a 110 that did that- was a bad plug wire - worked when it wanted to kinda thing-

Weak ignition components tend to fail once the engine heats up to normal operating temps. Yours may run fine when just started, then crap out when it finally gets warmed up. Next time you go out boating, take an inductive timing light with you. When (if) it slows down again, take the cowing off and check each plugwire for spark. The flashes from the gun will show the quality of spark on each wire.

I was thinking of just buying the power pack and coils maybe this would solve my problem.
what do you guys recommend ???

Coils are generally a low failure component. Packs fail more often, but they are expensive. (two of them on your engine.) I'd tend to run the engine till you have the same failure, then check spark. You may then find that one of the two packs is bad. Then purchase a new one. Buying one as a spare is an expensive option-and it could actually be a stator or timer base problem.

The major cause for packs to fail is voltage in the ground circuit. There should be no votage at the kill wire to the pack..(black/yellow wire). If voltage found, maybe you have a faulty switch. Replace if needed. Check your switch and harness. Mine is a 1980 and has a bad wire at the connector in the motor....check it just in case, cause it can kill your new pack in a moment.....happens to me twice till found the problem. Also I?ve found some good used packs for a fraction of the cost....you can use one of this before the new one ($$$$$), just in case.

Ok so I found lots of corrotion in my power plugs I disconnected and reconnected and boom there it was so now I have tons of cleaning before I go out to the lake again.
