put a new water pump in and decided to test warning horn. Grounded wire going to thermostat switch and got a high pitched squeal. Not knowing if thats correct or not. Shouldnt it be a loud buzzing noise or is the squeal correct?

IF??? it's making any kind of noise??? that shows the system's working.
The horn/buzzer is small and very hard to hear.
On my boat I removed the buzzer and replaced with a motorcycle horn.
If you can't hear that?? then get hearing aids. :)
You can use car horns too.

Just make sure the horn's wired right.

Was going WOT one time years ago......suddenly my engine started making bad sounds and stopped......only then could I hear the warning buzzer under the console.....way too late. Have installed a car type horn and a warning light....and regular impeller changes since.....

Loud warning horn and flashing light on the console!
Perhaps a 12 volt strobe type light.
