Warning horn

Hey, Great site my ? is i want to hook up a light to my warning horn so when the horn sounds the light will come on and need to know what color to hook to its a 200hp johnson 1990. Thanks

Welcome to the board.<br />My brother was a deaf mute, and we rigged his boat with bright, flashing white colored LEDs, available at radio Shack for a buck apiece. You will need a resistor inline for those tho, as they operate on 1-3Volts DC, and the buzzers are 12VDC.<br />Of course, you can use 12volt auto dash indicator bulbs too, and they are a tad cheaper...Just aren't as pretty.<br />LEDs are polarised, so they have a + and - end. But the car lamps are not, so it does not matter which goesw where. Just put it accross the posts of the buzzer. Instant light.

The horn is wired with purple (12+ when key is on), and when the alarm sounds, the tan wire completes circuit by supplying the ground. Some older horns used a third wire (black) - which ever the case, you want to hook up between purple and tan.<br /><br />-John

And I just remembered something...Another reason we used the LEDs as opposed to the auto lamps...Current. The senders are only able to deliver switching current,and a high current bulb may ruin them.You can get around this by installing a relay accross the buzzer terminals, and the lamps to the relay's switched terminals.<br />You don't need to worry about current draw when using the LEDs because they are very low current (lower than the buzzer for sure).

Bloomer:<br /><br />12'er is right. You'll need a resistor in series with the LED. I'd recommend a 'super bright' red LED with a resistor value of 330 OHM 1/2 watt. Believe me....it'll get your attention!<br /><br />
