Warning Horn?

I currently have a 1996 Johnson 115HP. From reading other posts and experience with a previous Mercury motor here is my question.
When I turn the key to on, I get no beep. Should there be a beep to indicate that warning alarms are connected?
My Merc would beep when I turned the key but the Johnson doesn't.
Thanks for any ideas and advice.

Re: Warning Horn?

Depends on what systems are connected and functioning. They could've all been disabled in some way by a previous owner.

I would think that motor should have a beep when the igntion is on. Do you have the System Check Tach? If so, you definately should get the beep.

You might check the three alarms (low oil in the tank, no oil at the OMS Pump, engine overheat), to see if they trigger the beep and idiot lights.

Turn the key ON (not start), then short the tan overheat sensor wire to the engine block. The hot alarm (steady beep) should sound. If not, the horn is defective, bad wiring, or the horn has been disabled. If the auto-oiler is still connected you would be advised to get the alarm system fixed as without it you have no warning of an oiling problem and the engine will be turned into an anchor. If the oiling system was disabled and you are pre-mixing fuel, chances are the entire alarm system was disabled instead of just the oiler alarms.

Re: Warning Horn?

Silvertip, thanks for your wisdom and advice. Unfortunately, I still have the VRO system intact.:( Guess I'll need to tract down some wires and see what's happening.

I've had the motor and boat for 4 years now but just recently thought about the lack of a warning alarm when I turned the key on.
