Re: Warning Alarm

You need at minimum a code reader, or you will spend hours and hours of blindly testing each sensor in the MPI system.
Here's a link to download the OEM service manual. It has all the individual tests in it.

Just remembered this thread on how to make a code reader for the MEFI ecm's.

Thanks for the info. After reading prior posts I was wondering if any code reader, such as one you can buy at Advance Auto, would work on my engine or did Mercruiser make changes so that you can only use their code reader? On Saturday I also disconnected all three sensor wires for the oil lube, temperature and oil pressure and the alarm was still going off leading me to believe it is definitely something else. I also want to check the voltage going from the alternator to the ECM to make sure it is at least 12 volts. I remember that would also cause the soft alarm to go on. It could be this because once I get over 3,000 RPM the alarm goes silent which could be an indication that the voltage has increased enough to turn off the soft alarm.
Thanks

Same way we did them checking the codes on automobiles. Only needed the paperclip. Used the light on the dash

Or the Tech Mate from Rinda

He wants to read the actual voltage output as seen by the ECM, and a paper-clip and LED won't give that... Rinda sell the diagnostic software... if you are intending fixing your own stuff, it can save more money than it costs... (I know, I have it)

Re: Warning Alarm

I had the Techmate, and access to software on a laptop. You might save some time with the laptop software, for a fully functional tool that tells you everything, the Techmate can't be beat. Plus you can read it out in the sun on a boat.

Like Chris said, if you intend to work on your own EFI motors, you MUST have the tools to do it. That includes the manual, the diagnostic tool, DVM, fuel gauges, and the ability to use them.
