warming up old rubrail makes it soft and pliable again

My rubber rubrail piece is coiled up while I work on the boat. It is very stiff and I have a hard time inserting it back into the aluminum.

However, while working on my boat recently it sat directly in the hot sun. The heat made parts of it soft again. I was able to get it back into place with my bare hands with no trouble.

When cooled down it is stiff again.

Do you guys know of any techniques to heat this rubber up? Hows about putting it in the oven at 110 degrees. What do you think.

Taco and several other rubrail companies recommend exactely what you did. Leave it in the sun for awhile to soften it, then install.

I would leave it out in the sun for several hours . The only other thing I would consider trying would be a heat gun and you would have to be extremely carefull with tht . I wouldnt try the oven unless of course your single cause if your not you will be :D.

Sun works the best but a bathtub full of hot water will do the trick also.

I had a helper stay 1 foot in front of me installing with a hot hair drier on the new insert and it was easy to work with.

Hair dryer is always out of the question for me. I've burnt up more of my wifes hair dryers than I can count taking them to the shop. I think she keeps them under lock and key now.
