want a new color

My boat is a 1971 Manatee 15' v-hull. It is a goldish-brown or burnt mustard color with a white deck in front of the windshield.
I think it is ugly and I want to change the color. I was told that the original color is molded into the fiberglass hull and gel coated over.
Can this be lightly sanded, painted, and new gelcoat done without spending a fortune?
My brother has an air compressor and paint sprayer, can this be useful in my quest in changing the color?

Re: want a new color

The original color is in the gelcoat. The boat can be painted without the spray equipment. There are several paint brands on the marine market that are designed to be applied with a roller. The paint is self leveling. If it is applied as directed it will level out and leave a great smooth shine.
They can also be applied using spray equipment if you wish, however I have had great results without spraying.
Below is a link to one of the products available. It has allot of good info on how to use the system.
Pay most of your attention to prepping for the paint job and it will come out great.
