Re: Walleye fans

We fish the western basin of Lake Erie. Walleyes have been our number one target for the past 20 + years. Next year we will target another fish Steelheads. Fom what I've heard they fight better but I know they cannot taste better. Merry Christmas!

Re: Walleye fans

I fish mainly for walleyes but catch many species while doing so. I am not serious about my fishing however and do it mostly for relaxation.

Re: Walleye fans

I live in SW Virginia and started fishing for Walleye 3 years ago at an Army Corp lake that the VDGIF stocks and manages. The resident biologist pointed me in the right direction as far as tips, tactics and literature are concerned. I of course subscribe to Walleye Insider. I have really enjoyed the challenge of going after a different specie of fish and believe you me, they are different in about every respect compared to anything else I've fished for. Spring through Fall 'Ole Marble Eyes gets my undivided attention. I throw Husky Jerks and Bomber Long-A type lures in the Spring at night when they are chasing spawning Alewives (primary forage) and troll spinner crawler/harnesses later in the year. I usually catch a hundred or so casting and trolling combined. The reservoir I fish would probably be best described as canyon-type. Up to 150' deep with lots of rock bluffs but with some short mud flats. Water is usually very clear except after extended hard rain nearing flood-like conditions Although I caught my largest (8#-14oz) in Jan of '03, late Summer through Winter are really tough for me. Have burned up several tanks of fuel trying to find them. My wife and I had rather have Walleye than "ANY" other freshwater specie and prefer it over most salt water fish. In our kitchen, Walter is King.

Re: Walleye fans

Caught my 1st "through a hole in the frozen lake" walleye last Sunday!! Big guy too....whopping 8 inches! Snapped a picture, tossed em back to grow up, and marked the spot on the GPS. Got another nibble after I dropped my line back down, but didn't reel up to check it. I had to get out of the single digit weather and hauled out only about 20 mins later and found that that nibble stole my minnow...damn.

After that (my first weekend ever on the ice), I went out and bought the cheapest 2 man portable ice hut I could find and a heater so I can stay out all day now. Can't wait to drag all my crap back out on the ice and hit that spot again on Saturday! :D
