When I am in the northern climes and seeking fish to eat, 'eyes are the preferred prey.

Shore lunch of freshly caught 'eyes fried in butter. . . .MMMMMMMMM! Worth driving to LOTW for.

My methods of musky fishing usually provide a limit of walleye in a day.

In Minnesota walleye is the main fish. I do fish for them more than any other fish but I'm not a die-hard walleye guy. Night fishing in the fall for the big ones is the best fishing I have all year.

Kevin

not real hard-core but it consumes me most days out.. I mostly fish the bite if one species is hot, but tend to target 'Walter' more often.

..the 30" #10 mark haunts me tho. this next years trips to higher % waters will hopefully bring that barrier down.. I hope.

In southern Nebraska waters, I've met up with a 15lb 5 oz specimen, but my buddy has a 15-9 on the wall from the same body of water 3 years ago.
Ne state record is 16-4. That's about as big as they get in this area, with 8-9lber's being the "big ones" you hear about most often.
The eastern edge of NW Kansas has some untouched walleye waters that harbor some nice fish in the 10-12lb possibilities.
Good to know theres' some "eye" chasers here!

Walleye is my main target for the last two years or so. Started fishing local walleye tournaments this past year here in SW Missouri and have entered the PWT tourney as a co-angler to be held on Bull Shoals next May!

My largest so far is an 8lb from Bull shoals.

Bill-MO, It would be great if you could draw Ron Seelhoff...he's got 4 top-money titles now in PWT. He lives 30 miles from me...we do a little early season fishing in SW Nebraska together, and some yotey hunting in the winter. Lotta good guys on that circut.

Nice Fish Walleyehed! ,, they must've been perty white in color it sounds? #15'ers in the live well would be something out of a Jurasic Park movie here..nothing but fins and teeth! ;) I'm interested now .. never traveled too far for walleyes other than the northern mid-west. What waters are ya hitting out there and what tactics are you're favorites? Sounds mighty fun!

I hope to make it up to LBDN in late-spring/early-summer for the shorline action on the rocks if the water temps are right.. had some fun up there before but, bottom bouncing purple spinner rigs had been the call - not casting cranks/jigs like i was looking forward to doing. Best I've done there has been 26-27's .. never hooked any 'hogs' myself but, netted a few for my brother.. nice to see in the boat anyways! :)

Good luck in the co-angler this year Bill!.. give'em he|| and take the $$ home! I hear ole sneaky Ted Tagasaki has developed a new c-4 floating jig at Lindy .. should be a real crowd pleaser ;) :D

Re: Walleye fans

Barlow, Swanson Res. in Ne has been a top walleye producer for many 12-15lb fish in the last 10-12 yrs, but the 16-4 record eludes us...
spring (late winter for big females) trolling shallow divers against the rocks at night will be the best bet for pre-spawn females, which we always return to the water if between 5 and 10lbs. They are the most fertile as far as number of eggs produced. a 15lb'er in this area has very few "good" eggs that will accept fertilization. We do alot of jigging as well with 3" grub tails-VERY hot at night against the rocks for good eaters (16-20")
early summer, huge, shallow flats with shadraps, followed by worm harnesses, then creek channels with lead or floaters with worms or minnows worked slowly near bottom.

That 15-5 was 32-1/8" long, and if I remember right, the girth was 23+". My buddy's 15-9 was only 31-7/8, but plum full of eggs. we measured everything we could, recorded it and he released that fish, and had a fiberglass repo done.

Re: Walleye fans

I got hooked on walleye just this past year...actually more or less re-discovered fishing as a whole. Fished a ton as a kid, wondering why I ever stopped now.
Love catchin those eyes and they taste even better! It's really the only thing I go out with the intentions of catching now. Did ok this past year, but not really used to their patterns on Oneida Lake where I fish.
Can't wait for next year. Thinking about trying the ice fishing though...just so I don't have to wait till next year! :D

Re: Walleye fans

I too target the walleye.
Used to do Winnebago thru the ice.
I'm not a total phanatic, and the day's results often reflect it, but always consider them to be the number one table fare.
Springtime Wolf river, Green Bay, and Upsala or Vermillion Ontario Canada are my favorites. But also many local or regional lakes. Cousin caught a 31+" when I was out with him last year.
No wall hangers for me yet.

And of course ther is Miloman, a member I have not seen around much this year. He does a lot of walleye tourneys.

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=20;t=000511#000000

Love fishing for and especially eating Walleye.

My favorite lakes are: Erie (OH), Mille Lacs (MN), Oahe (SD).

My most productive bait, for me, has always been a bottom bouncer trailing a night crawler harness. Always had better luck with crawlers than leeches.

DJ, crawler on a bottom rig is hard to beat when they're on the flats.
Leeches work on rare occasion in the Ne waters we fish, but when they do work, it seems to be before the Hot-times of summer hit. Presentation-wise, a jig head-n-leech drifted slowly has been good, but not nearly as productive as a crawler.

walleyehed,

Now that you mention it, "flat" is the key word there. You're right.

All of those lakes I mentioned have fairly featureless bottoms.

Re: Walleye fans

walleyehed, Ron is one of the guys I would love to be paired with, or at least maybe get a day of prefishing with him. I already have my lodging and boat slip reserved for the whole week. This will be my first experience with the big boys and look forward to the schooling!

If you can catch him, tell him you know Kenny in goodland (I done most of the work on his aircraft as well)and tell the fart I said he needs to take you pre-fishing with him. He's generally pretty good about that kind of stuff. Good luck!

Re: Walleye fans

Walleyehed, I gave up competitive Bass fishing 5 years ago to strictly walleye. Talk about being ostracized by the sunfish guys. LOL

I recently fish Sherman res. in NE right after closed harvest fishing/post spawn. If there is anyone that wants to experience walleye fish that is the time and place. Presentation: 8#, small split shot, huge lively minnow. I couldn't tend two rods, crazy.

Omaha
