I have searched the forum, but not found what I'm looking for.

I have purchased carpeting to put on the walls around the dinette and other areas on my SRV220. Looking at it tonight, I just couldn't figure out how to cut the carpet properly to go up, over, down all those ridges. Any tips? I'd hate to cut the carpet wrong. I bought PL200 adhesive for it. If pics are needed, I can post some. This is supposed to be my Saturday project.

Re: Wall covering

Usually headliner (vinyl with or without 1/4" foam backing) or hulliner (a type of light weight carpet for walls and ceiling) are installed with spray adhesive like 3M #97. That lets the liner get tucked into the crevices, and you have to make the appropriate cuts to remove excess so it doesn't bunch up.

What kind of carpet did you get?

Re: Wall covering

Thanks, Mark. I just got your generic indoor/outdoor carpet. The same stuff that the guy that previously worked on this boat used. It's pretty flexible, but I'm sure it's going to be a job to get it to go smoothly over the fiberglass. I didn't get anything done on it yesterday unfortunately and today may be another write off, but maybe I'll go look at the spray adhesive today. What's the advantage of that over the paste?

Re: Wall covering

hello mrsokee..

Its hard to say how to without some pics .. but Ill give you some tips laying carpet.

1. get a resporator ( the good stuff is nasty breathing ).
2. get a quality razor cutter.. ( quick change is good ) and a pack of blades. Not the flat blades of course..
3. Do the sole ( floor ) first IMO. You have to start with laying the carpet and tucking/folding all your corners as much as possible.
4. Its kinda hard to explain .. but start with your Outside corners and cut from the base/corner up..fold and cut your inside corners..cut off excess carpet from cut to cut leaving about 2" extra carpet. Go over all inside/outside corner cuts making sure a good corner cut. Then cut your sole seam nicely. ( change blades as soon as they stop cutting like butter ).

5. fold 1/2 carpet onto itself.. glue down with adhesive ( I use contact cement. .. depending on the backing .. test a scrap with whatever glue you use to make sure it will not attack the backing first ).

6. fit your sides the same way to mate with sole. Glue down seam first then work your way up.

It really is hard to explain .. but isnt that hard m8..

YD.

Re: Wall covering

Thanks, Yacht Dr. That makes sense. I was going to start on the short end, but after reading your instructions I think I'll start on the bottom of the wall piece. The sole is already done. I'm just doing the verticals now. I'm going to go make my first attempt right now... I'll take pics as I go in case I mess up and then someone call tell me where I went wrong!!LOL.
