I have an 87 evinrude 120 4carbs with VRO disconnected running at 50:1 runs great wide-open loads up during idle. Checked plugs, compression, cleaned carbs made sure throttle valves is closed at idle adjusted needle jet screws. I have seen several posts were everybody has problems after disconnecting VRO. I understand that when in an idle mode the VRO changed the mixture to 100:1. What can I do to fix this very frustrating problem. :(

Re: VRO

Only the very early VRO. The pump with the little tag that said VRO2 pumped 50/1 all rpms. The omc school in sunrise was teaching 50/1 1989. Upgrade kits that were made availabe to first owners for 69.00 in 1989 pumped 50/1. I here that later 95/96 may pump 60/1. I have never seen a service manual that gave this spec. I liked to see what the new company does with the VRO.

Re: VRO

In the meantime, try switching brands of oil. What were the results of the compression test? You might find the return hose is clogged.Just a guess.
