All I know;
Was being transported by water when the stbd motor, stbd riser/elbow had broken the water inlet to the elbow. Captain stated a Guardian shut down and came in on the other engine. R/R the water fitting connection .
Motor does crank, electric fuel pump is heard, but motor will not run.
? Do these motors shutdown with a trouble code for an overheat and do you need a laptop to correct the situation

Hey Ed, if you can, try to get the volvo engine serial number as that info really helps Muc out with finding out all the details to share with the newer engine models such as these.

Yes, serial number. But also EVC version is important.

You might need a scan tool to find the problem, but if you correct the problem and do a restart. That will clear the shutdown.

Generally speaking, only thing that will shut an engine down is complete loss of fly by wire info to the ECM/EVC. Everything else causes derate or forced idle. No manufacturer wants the boat to get carried over the dam just because of an overheat.

Manasquan Marine is incharge of the code clearing cause I know nothing about these engines. But will update this post when I hear back

A quick update, Tech came to the boat to clear the codes and had the motor restart normally, All is well .No mention of what was cleared but it seems with a hi temp shutdown you cant just restart the motor until you clear the shutdown code first

This is very interesting because it goes against what is printed in all of Volvo’s diagnostic manuals.
There are some codes that will prevent a start on these engines, but they mainly deal with checks that the ECM preforms on itself at key on. And they mostly deal with internal processor failures. These codes can be cleared by disconnecting the main battery and keep alive power supplies to the ECM. This is one of the reasons we want the operator to key on and wait a few seconds to crank the engine. We want these checks to complete before the ECM gets the low voltage that happens during cranking.

It would be nice if the tech that worked on this could explain how an overheat code could shut down an engine and set a code that would keep it from restarting. This goes against all the published manuals.

I was looking up something for another post and found this in the diagnostic manual for this engine.

DTC 2135 TPS 1/2 Simultaneous Voltages Out-of-Range (SPN-51 FMI-31)
This fault will set if the throttle position and redundancy is lost. During this active fault the MIL light will be on and Engine Shutdown be activated.

NOTICE! This is the only DTC that will command engine shutdown.

Diagnostic Aids
• Throttle position sensor 1 and 2.
• Check condition - cranking.
• Fault condition - Throttle position on TPS 1 and TPS 2 are greater than 4.8 volts or less than.2 volts.
• MIL - on during active fault.
• Hard warning buzzer.
• Engine Shutdown.

Yesterday had a customer who couldn't get the Garmin connect screen to power up. Kept mashing the button and scratching his head.

I came aboard and turned off the main battery switch for one minute, turned it on (has an acr so "both" is emergency start only, had to explain that too). Waited patiently, key up engine to "on" waited until the accessory buttons stopped blinking. Pressed power on Garmin unit once, beep, splash screen, acknowledged liability. Waited for boot, accessory buttons blinked. Then everything was communicating.

Started engine, waited until self checks stabilized. Everything works now. He was happy with the tutorial/explanation. Got a twenty from him as he said that was the best, simplest, most comprehensive explanation he's ever had about his boat
