Volvo to Mercruiser

This boat had a Volvo penta outdrive and Chrysler slant Six in it. I got a 170 mercruiser setup to go in it, would the boat motor mounts work or would they require some modification. I don't have the 170 handy to measure. I have some transom work to do obviously including cutting a new transom hole.

you basically have an obsolete VP motor and drive and want to replace it with the mercruiser 470 and MC1?

I question why you would want to use the 470, however that is another issue

you need to close off the transom and re-build it

then you need to mount mercuiser transom shield at the proper X dimension (they are different for the VP and Mercruiser drives)

then you need to mount the motor, align the motor and then build the front motor mount boxes.

This is a different hull than my other thread it’s a sangster 19” it had the Chrysler 6 and Volvo outdrive. I hate to haul it to the dump. The biggest reason for the 470 not 170 my bad is it’s cheap and runs and it gives me something to do this winter.

The glassing I’ve done enough of so I’m not worried about that, just cutting the keyhole correct when I’m done.

Looking around at engines a rebuilt 350 target master with a 280 Volvo outdrive is available, and a overhauled 351 Windsor and 188 outdrive are available, a little to much of a leap from the Chrysler slant six and 250 Volvo outdrive? Tried finding HP’s for above.

skip the ford

the 280 drive and motor would match your transom cut-out.

You don’t think it’s to big with it only having the slant six in it before?
your asking the guy that pulled a perfectly good 300hp small block to build about a 450hp big block.....

why are you enamored with obsolete motors and drives? just curious.

the volvo AQ120B has many NLA parts

you would be better off finding a 290DP or a DP-A drive with a V6 or V8 that is 20 years+ newer

Keep running across them. And it’s a boat I’m probably going to sell.

I run across 73 pintos when looking for old cars, doesnt mean they are worth buying......

I mention that because it would be more work and potentially more cost to buy an obsolete motor that you cant get parts for vs the current obsolete motor you have that you cant get parts for. you would not be any further ahead than where you are, in fact, it may cost you more in the long run

Plus, if the potential buyer knows anything, they wouldnt buy a boat with an obsolete motor/drive
