Out on the river yesterday and everything fine until we fired up to head home and after engaging foward under part throtle I was hearing a whiring whine upto about 3K and from 3.5K rpm it would disappear checked the oil this morning and no water but a few fine metal particals in the oil and a very modest amount on the magnet, could it be the gimble bearing or is it the outdrive?
Any thoughts would be appriciated.

The modest amount on the magnet is normal but a picture will help. I too have a 2005 5.0 GXi w/ SX-M that was new to me about 10 years ago. Early on I did have a ‘whine’ fm the gimbal bearing. But it was constant. Later, as FC suggests, I got the dreaded VP Fuel Pump Whine. Couple of things: if the fuel pump > it will be hot to the touch. So, take it out for a run, hear the whine and come down to idle and go touch the pump (its 2 pumps in the assembly: low and high, high will be HOT).

Other indications of it being the pump are: low fuel pressure on the high-pressure side (do u have a gauge?) and paint debris on the screen of the fuel pressure regulator (it’s easy to take out and look at it).

I always say that a bad bearing will eventually find you. I.e. it will get worse over time and will be obvious what it is, usually before a catastrophic failure. If the fuel pump, it could leave you stranded without warning.

Keep poking including having someone else drive while its whining and see if you can narrow down where the sound is coming from.
