volvo penta starting problems

I own a Glastron that has a 3 liter Volva Penta. I've had it for about three years without any problems. I went to take the boat out on the lake this past weekend and I ran into a couple of problems.

When I turn the key into the ignition, I get a large buzzing sound followed by a clicking sound. So, it won't start. At first, I thought it was the battery, but the radio turns on fine. After looking at my engine, it looks like that it is the starter that is the problem. Is there a way to fix this, or do I have to get a new starter?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: volvo penta starting problems

It is definately your battery. Your radio runs because it is a small load but you don't have enough to turn over your engine. Charge or change your battery.

Make sure battery cables are clean and tight (with a wrench, not just finger tight with wingnuts), then get a DVM and measure the voltage of the battery. You should see a minimum of 12V on the meter. If not get the battery charged and load tested. Do this before you go wasting money on a new starter that may not be your problem.
