Volvo Penta DP trim indicator replacement procedure needed

The trim indicator on my 2002 2460 Pursuit Denali with a Volvo Penta 280HP DP needs to be replaced. I realize the wires are routed thru the drive assembly to the rear of the engine where the junction plug exists. Can someone who has done this before guide me with the procedure to extract the old units wires out (I believe the trick is not dropping the clip when r & R is done) and the feeding of the new units wiring in. Is a pull string used to make things easier? Also, once installed, is the new unit adjusted based on the guage needle being located down just at the point that the out drive is full down? Thanks in advance for your help.

Here's the answer from a couple of other threads here at iboats

Tie a string to the end of the old sender wires inside the the engine compartment before you pull them out. Then attach the string to the new sender to install.

The problem is not feeding the wires. Typically it is the grommet as the wires pass through the housing. The grommet is part of the wiring from the sensor and there is a clip that holds it in place.

The current part number for the trim senders is 3594989

Just the one that is displayed. I'm curious if there is any trick to positioning the grommet. I would guess that once it is pulled into the opening it stops as it seats itself. I presume placing the clip in its place is challanging based on the boat configuration. Some may have more difficult access than others. A tech told me he puts a rag in the area beneath the clip so if it does fall it falls on the rag and it can be retrieved as opposed to it landing under the engine. The tech said all could be done without any outdrive removal. I didn't learn how to adjust the unit once installed as he could only spend a moment to talk with me. Hope this helps as I continue to learn more. I do wish someone who did this would respond but no luck so far.

I know this isn't answering your question but I will never replace mine again. Too much money for a part that will fail again and that you don't really need.

Hi Bruce, I sold my boat with the agreement that I would repair the indicator otherwise I wouldn't worry about it not woking as well. That being said, even though you would never repair yours again, did you do it yourself or have it done? If done yourself, can you share any information on the procedure? Thanks, Jim
