I have a leaking steering actuator. The boat is a 99 Crownline 202 Volvo Penta DP-SM
Do I buy a rebuild kit for 24 year old steering actuator and attempt to do it myself. I am pretty handy. 50.00

Do I send it to 5 star marine and have them rebuild a 24 year old steering actuator? I heard they are the best. If any of you have done this have there been any issues? 500.00

Or do I just bite the bullet and buy a new one for 800.00

I was told that sometimes the plastic plunger can break even if you replace the seals and then you have to start all over.

What is the best play here?

I've never rebuilt any power steering actuator, always replace with oem. Other manufacturers actuators are non servicable and I feel there's too much at stake to risk a failure. There's a lot of pressure on the high side of the system

Plus, the new oem one comes with a warranty

I would get the kit from FiveStar and do it yourself

Yes, rubber bits do not last more than 15-20 years

Suggest getting your outdrive tilt and trim cylinder kits from FiveStar as well

Well, I bought a rebuild from five star and the thing leaked less after 1 season. They refused to stand by their warranty claiming I have grit in my system - which I don’t. So my views on them is they don’t stand by their warranty and make all kinds of excuses.
