Volvo Penta acceleration lag

I have a 1987 Sun Runner with a Volvo Penta. I took the boat out for the first time the other day since I bought it. In order to start up the boat I need some one at the engine to accelerate that way, after I get it started I use the the throttle up front. The next problem is that when I use the throttle and accelerate a lot, that boat lags and sounds like it is about to die for like a second and then it finally takes off. Any advice on what I need to do to fix it would be great, Thanks!

Re: Volvo Penta acceleration lag

Exactly what engine do you have? Volvo Penta makes a lot of different engines

You don't need anyone at the engine, to operate the throttle, at any time. The handle at the helm has a release button, so you can give the engine gas, in neutral.
