Volvo Penta 4.3L Harmonic Balancer

Currently replacing my Volvo Penta 4.3L in my 2000 Glastron and have a question about the insert in the middle of the harmonic balancer for the water impeller assembly. The new motor was exact in every way but did not have this insert. Is this insert easily removed and installed in the new balancer? Do I need to reuse my old balancer? Thanks for your replies.

Do you have a picture of the water pump assembly ? VP and Merc used the balancers that GM supplied them so if the generations of engines are the same should bolt up to new balancer.

The back of the water impeller fits on the insert of the balancer. It must be there for the impeller housing. Trying to find out how the remove the insert. Is it pressed in or easily removed from the back. Thanks.

Can't say for sure but my guess is the insert piece in the balancer pictured is actually part of the sea water pump assy. Looks like it just presses into the back of the mount/shaft housing plate

Possible it managed to get "pressed" in and stuck in the balancer?

I would start by attempting to get a very thin putty knife between the insert and the balancer face. Could be just held in place with the rtv used to seal the keyway. Of course one would wonder how it held there if its supposed to be pressed into the water pump assy. Just speculating here

Rarely a reman long block comes with a balancer but some do. If you're having the long block assy you have now rebuilt you'll definitely need it

Seems there may be a keyway slot inside the center of the damper in looking at used ones online,

In the op's first post the photo shows the bolt securing the balancer to the crankshaft is through the insert. Makes me wonder if this is an offset washer used to gain clearance for the pump assembly, which is bolted on as a drive pulley would be.

Ha! Didn't even look at the first post pic

Can't say I've seen that before, or at least don't remember, been a minute since I've swapped a long block

Second guess would be it's a guide spacer to ensure pump shaft is centered to the crank and is most likely required for the sea water pump

volvo manufactures it with the snout so that only volvo pullys and dampers fit the crankshaft
.I converted from crankshaft pump to the Bravo type installed on a volvo
and machined a reliefe in the mercruiser pully to fit the crankshaft. pumps a lot more water too.

Got it figured out. The insert/washer just comes out easily from the back side of the balancer once you pull it off. It also easily taps into the new balancer. I have included pics of the insert out and installed into the new one.
