Genuine parts run about 145.00.
Even if yours ran 200.00, 400.00 to pull the drive and replace those parts is pretty damn steep. I am just a backyard hack and can do that work in about an hour. Even if it took them 2 hours at 100.00/hr (going rate at my VP dealer is 90.00, and he's pricey, but good) that still leaves a pretty big head scratcher.
But as long as you are happy.
And yes, your are right they are just automotive ujoints, but they take a lot more abuse with the angles we run them at, between steering and trim. Those are just automotive seals aren't designed to be submerged under those conditions. We aren't talking road spray here. If you get a leaky bellows you have a submerged ujoint.
But as long as they are OK. Just don't kid yourself into thinking they will hold up like automotive ones. I just had mine done last year to have them redone this season after a little water intrusion. Doesn't take much, especially if it's salt.
Now go use it and see how it runs

U joints were fine. i checked them out myself, no slop at all, moved flawlessly with no noise. my dad also checked them he gave the thumbs up, and the dealer also said they were fine (they'd say they were bad before anybody!! ) so i greased 'em up real good till nothing but new grease came out the seals. dont forget these u joints are no different than car u joints and have seals that are suppose to keep water out for the most part as u know so....
the bearing noise has always been there since i owned the boat, it just got alot louder lately so i had it repaired. all else was in good shape, alignment good, joints good. the bellows were shot tho....
if i ordered the parts through any of the three local dealers it would of totaled 200 bucks for the gimbal, and two bellows, genuine parts......
