A while back, I crossed terminals on the battery....got white smoke coming off the alternator. Since then I have to put the boat in Nuetral - prime the carb several times - hold it in wide open throttle position and it starts at high rpm - I back it down really fast and runs fine at idle. I'm wondering if I blew the electric choke? or maybe burnt some other wire that controls the choke?
Also, the boat runs and idles perfect once started and warmed up. I do have to prime it to start it every time.
You have to pump the throttle to set the choke , as mentioned pull flame arrestor off and see what choke is doing during start up

Volvos get the electric choke form the AC output of the alternator which is why you need to measure AC with your meter.

And keep in mind this is a Holley carb you can also ask questions about their auto choke system on Holley’s own website tech forum.
I guess it would more properly be called an un-choke system since the choke technically is always closed till it gets power to the heater coil.
The older GM system used with Rochester carbs with the divorced choke used heated air from the exhaust crossover in the intake to heat the spring to open the choke. These tended to open slower that electric chokes because they respond to actual engine temp and marine engines tend to warm up slower than the equivalent auto engines (160 vs 195 thermostats). However they are not prone to electrical issues and work well as long as the choke shaft & linkage are kept clean.
