He said yes, he replaced that sensor and checked all wires and connections.

The sensor is telling the ECM it's overheating.
Don't see it being the sensor because it was replaced and same problem. That leaves the connections between sensor and ECM or it's the ECM

Do you think this is something my husband and I could replace? The ECM? I suppose we should check the connections ourselves as well. I have searched online and cannot find a manual for this engine or any how-to's regarding the replacement of the ECM, or even where to find one. Anything you can share with us we would greatly appreciate it.

Manuals can be obtained from a VP dealer

The ECM is quite expensive and really need to make sure it's what is causing the issue. I'm guessing but sounds like your between a rock and hard spot because there are no VP dealers near you.

It's easy enough to replace the ECM part number is 21367572 and sells for $2,300 but I would not do that unless your sure.

How far away is a VP dealer?

and @muc can you provide any thoughts?

I don't have a dealer near me, only one marina that sells parts and they're about 90 minutes from me. Could you please tell me which wires to check? I suppose my husband and I could check those first before doing anything. The sensors have been replaced so I don't know what else it could be. $2300 is pricey for sure.

Using your serial number I looked up the manuals on line. The site list one for Catalyst exhaust, EGC Diagnostics and Mechanical. If it was me I would get the EGC Diagnostics manual which list at $59

That said I don't know what is contained in them, so unsure if this will do it. Suggest look up a Dealer on the net and ask them which one you should get

We've had all the wires checked; all is good. I took it out to test run, and it overheated within 5 minutes to 225. The alarm sounded, and it went into limp mode. I have never seen it heat up that high. So it definitely doesn't sound like a computer issue. I'm at my wit's end. Any other ideas?

The manual will indicate if you have problem X do Y test and that's were we are at
