i just recently picked up a 1989 Baretta Phaser 230 with a GM 350 and a Volvo Penta 285 outdrive. my question is, im trying to run the motor in the driveway to flush all the salt out of the engine, i have a set of the earmuffs that i used on an old mercruiser but i dont really see where on this volvo 285 to put it.

what would be my options for fresh water so i dont overheat the engine?

anyone out there that knows about this particular outdrive?

i ordered the shop manual on it, but i wont have it for a couple weeks and i would like to get this boat tucked away for the winter soon. thanks

Re: volvo penta 285 question

Welcome to Iboats. Fellow Barreta owner and Volvo owner.:)

The water pickup is there, down low at the front of the outdrive. There is also a hole in the bottom of the drive that should be plugged when running on muffs.

Sometimes it's a little tricky using muffs since the intake is at the front of the drive, you may need to try different style muffs.

Hope that helps.

Good Luck.

Never run the boat without the muffs on it or you'll ruin your impeller and overheat the exhaust very quickly.

BTW, if you go to the adults only sticky at the top of the I/O section there are volvo manuals to download.

Re: volvo penta 285 question

I use a rectangular muffs with a plug in the bottom hole. I also use a bungie strap wrapped around the muffs on the top and bottom to help the cups fit snuggly against the drive.
