I have a 1975 Bayliner Nisqually with a Volvo 280 drive. I know in the stickies us stated you didnt need to know the boat but I thought it might help since I am unsure of the type of engine. I did use the stickies to try and find out but I couldn't figure it out....my apologies.

My boat stays in a slip during the summer months, then pulled out to a storage building. Boat has been dry up until I put it back in the water a few days ago.

Upon pulling into my slip I tied up......relaxed for a few moments and was about to head home. I thought I would look in the bilge one last time before I headed home. When I opened the bilge I thought I heard a trickle of water and there was a little water in the bilge (boat has always been dry).

Upon closer inspection I noticed water coming out through what I believe to be the bell housing.....the section carved out to inspect the flywheel, etc. I then took the boat out of the water.

Once on the trailer I noticed the u-joint bellow was basically shot.....huge holes in it , etc. This doesn't appear to be recent....it just doesnt look like this brittle thing just rotted. That being said I believe water has been in there for a season or two. This boat rarely moves once in the slip......

I am assuming there is a seal of some sort along the drive line (assuming correct terminolgy)? This is what I believe is out.

I have looked as best I can at diagrams and manuals....read as much on here as I can.....BUT I am still nervouse abour this since it will be my first time to tear into anything like this. I am fairly competent with tools, etc (I own a tire store)....but I have NEVER tore into an outdrive.

Can someone please assist me with explaining the process to me of what to take apart....I am not scared....I just dont want to tear something down I didnt need to. Also, either agree or disagree with my diag?

No hurt feelings here at all....I am open to do whatever it takes for the assistance.

I have been a lurker for a long time and you guys have been GREAT!!!

Thank you!!!!

Re: Volvo Penta 280 Bellow replacement

Yes, your bellows is probably shot, now you have water in the drive and the bearings in the flywheel housing.
Hate to say it, but you need to pull the engine and replace the bearings and seals in the flywheel housing as well as fixing the drive input shaft seal, and replacing the ujoints.
Being a Nisqually, I would guess you have a V8 of some model. Pictures would help. If it is a 5.7 Chevy, it would probably be the AQ225 B used by Volvo in 74-76.

Here is a thread on replacing just the belows http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309095

Here is a pdf file on how to replace the flywheel housing bearings.

View attachment Overhauling the Flywheel Cover.pdf

Here, you can download the manual for the 280 outdrive.

I thought there was a thread link where another member had to pull his engine for the same reason. I will find it and post a link to it as well.

Found it http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=265021

Thank you!!!

I may have to replace the bellow and put back in the slip.......it doesn't move once in......wife, I and the kiddos come down and stay on the weekends.

I will plan on doing the rest this winter when I have the boat out.

I cannot thank you enough!!!!

Off to try and find the right bellow :)

I believe that I have located a bellow at West Marine in Lewisville, TX.......about a 2 hour drive but worth it to not have to wait on delivery.

I will update once I give this a shot this weekend :)

Don't mean to be a purveyor of gloom and doom but think you should be aware of the dangers of NOT replacing the flywheel (PDS) bearings after they have been exposed to water. If the situation gets bad enough, the bearing races could be destroyed and allow the shaft, with the u-joints, to shake loose and destroy the flywheel cover.

It's your boat and nobody has the right to tell you what to do. Just feel that you should be aware of the possibility of more damage if you aren't at least aware of what to look for.
