Re: Volvo overheating, new boat owner.

My DSL runs fine, I was stationed in Anchorage so I know how the internet can be there.

I spent a good 2 days reading every thing that I could on this forum and I ran into a couple of posts but nothing real specific. Thats why I went a head and posted my first question.

PS: Ryan knows about the problem, and I am not the only one.

probably takes longer up in Alaska because all that data has to go so far uphill. :)

Any progress on this? I have the chance to pick up an 87' Bayliner with the same engine, it's great learning all of the possible problems. sirexilon, could you post a link to your thread? Thanks.

Re: Volvo overheating, new boat owner.

Photogmkr,

Sorry, I lost track of this one. Yes, the water pickup hose is under the outdrive bellows and over the exhaust bellows. It snakes around pretty good. It is installed from the inside of the boat thru the transom. There is a fitting that has to be removed on the inside to accomplish this. The hose has a flange molded into it to act as a gasket to seal at the inside transom fitting. I had my upper unit and driveshaft bellows removed when I replaced mine. Again, the fitting on the outdrive that the hose attaches to corrodes and will suck air. That area will not be under water in the tub and thus can suck air if it is bad. Out on the water that area is below the waterline at rest and at slower speeds and draws water fine, but then is above the water line while planing, that is when it can lose suction and cause major problems with the raw water supply. You are lucky to have caught this in the backyard.
