Hello all, I have a 98 Regal with 5.7 Volvo GXI. It runs fine when I first start it. However, if I stop the engine after it is fully warmed up and let it off for 20-30 minutes, it will start and idle fine. When I throttle up to get on plane, it accelertate for 10-15 seconds, then dies. I can usually start it again after cranking for 15-20 seconds. Replacing the fuel filter did not help. Vapor lock? Low fuel pressure? I have had no problems until this year. I appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

How long do you have to crank to get it to start first thing when its cold? Do you only have to crank that long when its warmed up?sounds to me like your getting air into the fuel lines. Most likely from a o-ring gone bad in the fuel pump. Once it is primed it seals but when no pressure is on it, it lets air into the system and loses the prime. thus having to crank it for 20 seconds or so to get it primed back up.

Mine did the same thing but only after it sat for about a week. When I hadn't used the boat for a week or so i would jump the fuel pump to the battery to prime the lines before going out. When i did this it would fire up by just flicking the key. If i didn't do that i would have to crank it for a while to fill the lines. Once i primed it, it was fine the whole day and then even the next, only when it sat for multiple days did it lose the prime. I had once instance where i thought i had primed it and it was not fully primed. I started it, it ran just fine, putted by the dock, when i took off and put a load on it is sputtered and died. There was still some air in the line and didn't have a good prime.

I would bet that the issue is you are losing prime due to a seal or ring.
