Hello
I have a Volvo aq131a and my oil is milky.
When i was on the water she idled nice but went to thrtle up and she boged down.
Opened the hatch and i had milky oil all over the place.
Came from the crank breather.
Does anybody know how the water got into the oil since the raw water is seperate from the cooling.
The rad is still full of antifreeze
Thank You

You have an engine oil cooler that is cooled with raw water. Only place the water can come from.

Re: Volvo aq131a Milky Oil

Might be a good idea to check the thermostat to make sure it is letting the engine come to the proper temperature. I just replied to someone else on this forum regarding milky oil. Here's the text.

I had a Kohler Marine Generator in my boat that I kept breaking valve springs. The valve springs would rust and break. The oil looked like chocolate milk and this was right after a rebuild. I did panic quite a bit, thinking it was a cracked block or bad head gasket. Turns out that the thermostat was stuck open, causing the motor to NOT come to appropriate temp and water was quickly condensing internally and mixing with the oil. I determined this to be the problem, since the engine was not "hot to the touch" after running it. There was so much condensation that after only 5 hours of run time, I would be UP by 1/2 a quart in the oil pan.

Once I replaced the thermostat, the problem went away. That was 4 years ago and I change the oil every year and ...no chocolate milk, no broken valve springs.

I'm not a mechanic and I'm not sure if this could be your problem, but I've heard that marine engines need to come to temperature in order to burn off condensation from cold lake water.

I think you are referring to a "closed" cooling system. I have a "raw" water system. The difference being that raw water circulates throughout my engine, while raw water cools the fluid that circulates throughout closed systems. I'm not saying that raw water is getting into your oil. Condensation or "sweat" could be accumulating if the engine is not allowed to come to the proper temperature. Might be a good idea to check the t-stat.

Re: Volvo aq131a Milky Oil

Thanks for the info ill change the thermastat anyway.
I have a closed cooling system with antifreeze and all is full.
My oil is milky colour witch is white.
The white oil came spashing out the crank breather.
Valves and cam are starting to rust.
Need help to find how this happend.
Thank You

Thermastat is ok,so now what?
Exhaust manifold ok,no cracks
Closed cooling system ok,full of antifreeze
Could it be my rear engine seal?
Thank You all

Re: Volvo aq131a Milky Oil

are you absolutely 100% positive you do not have an oil cooler??

as stated earlier, this would be the #1 suspect for allowing water into the oil system

How did you check the thermostat?

How did you check your exhaust manifolds?

No it cant be your rear engine seal.

Perform a compression test and a leak down test...

Re: Volvo aq131a Milky Oil

I checked the thermastat in pot of water on the stove,
I checked the manifold by standing it on it's end and filling it up with water and let it sit,no water came out of exhaust.
I have no oil cooler!!!!!
I have a closed cooling system and the oil was white.
I was told by a freind that it is rear seal and said alot of engines leak from there--don't now wheather to believe him or not ---
I checked commpresson all is o.k
Thank You

Deos anybody think that it could be the rear seal that let the water into the oil.
Has anybody here of this.
Thank You

Re: Volvo aq131a Milky Oil

i have the same motor, NO OIL COOLER! lol...

easiest way to check the system is to drain the oil, put new oil in first off, water in engine oil, BAD, rust, deposits, bad bad...

if it were me, i would replace the oil, setup with muffs and run her for a minute, see if theres any leaks, oil leaks, listen for air seepage, sqeaks, anything out of the ordinary... then check the oil after a couple minutes if its a bad leak, sounds like its in the heat exchanger system, like a bad head gasket or something, i had a old chevy that had a SLIGHT bad head gasket, and only leaked when the truck was hot and puttin out horsepower... drove me nuts tryin to figure out why it was doing that...
