I have a 1982 aq 125a. The engine operates properly for about 9 miles, I'll stop tie up with friends and then leave later on in the day. Somewhere around the 7ish mile mark on the way back the engine rpms start to back down. The engine usually runs around 4000 to 4200 at top speed. Once the engine starts to back down the engine stays around 3800. The problem eventually becomes worse and less and less power is available. I have had the boat for about 3 years, and before me it sat for about 4. I have rebuilt the carb, new plugs and wires, new distributor, replaced the fan belt, do all the regular maintenance. Having some trouble trying to pinpoint the problem, any suggestions?

4000-4200 is low, you should be reaching closer to 4800rpm.

Have you replaced the points and condenser? How about a compression test, dwell adjustment, and timing? Have you checked all those?

Could be air to engine issue too. Never seen it but heard of people laying towels over intake air and then the engine starves.
