Re: volvo 4 cylinder,is it worth it?

If you buy this boat, just make sure you are willing to spend $1,000 to $2,000 for repairs that cost only $500 to $1,000 for Merc.

Yeah but 500.00 adds up when you have to pay it again, and again, and again. The VP guys just have to pay 75.00 for an annual cap rotor and points. ;) Sorry couldn't resist.

It's pretty hard to argue the reliability and longevity of the rubber band engines and AQ series drives. Very few ever need repairs.

While parts are more expensive if you need them, it's a big if.

Trust me, they do need repair at times. But the repair may not always be expensive. Could be as simple as loose hose clamp on a fuel hose at the tank that the owner just wouldn't look for because he thought it was a waste of time.

LOL. I certainly had THAT one coming!! And think of the money I would have saved on ignition parts ;)

And I didn't realize when you said check all the hose clamps you meant check ALL the hose clamps! Geesh!

Re: volvo 4 cylinder,is it worth it?

guys i really appreciate all the responses. thank you very much. i've found out that this bayliner admiralty is a 1976. 4cyl volvo 270 outdrive, runs great, doing a compression check tomorrow and gonna make sure the transom and stringers aren't rotten. took a test drive on this boat (perch fishing in erie) we moved about six times and this little four banger fired right up each time without hesitation.i was impressed. for a thousand dollars if the compression checks out o.k. how can i really go wrong?

Test driving the boat is the best test you could do. Let us know what your compression numbers are. All the talk about the rubber band motors and this isn't one of those at all. In '76 they were still using pushrod motors.
Nothing wrong with those.:)

just got back from looking at this boat again. compression test went well all cylinders within 5 pounds 179 to 184. think i'm gonna buy this boat. this boat i think is a 1976, but it has a aq 125, atleast thats what it has on the spark arrestor. heat exchanger is on the front left. is this not the original engine? i didn't think they made the aq125 till the mid eighties?

Compression numbers sound great.

The older pushrod engines didn't have heat exchangers either. So someone switched motors.

The parts are more available for the 125 and they are good motors as you know.:)

If you buy it, poat some pics of the boat and motor. A lot of the 125s didn't use a front motor mount, I'm curious how yours would be mounted.

Good Luck!!

Re: volvo 4 cylinder,is it worth it?

will do, yeah those compression numbers had me feeling pretty good. he had it winterized with antifreeze, said he's owned this boat for five years. i've always been told not to use antifreeze ever. i asked where the block drains were and he showed me the one for the heat exchanger, said the other was on the back left down low, looks like a pain in the rear to get to. also with the heat exchanger thats takes regular 50/50 mix correct? should i leave that in over the winter? my main concern is to get all the fresh water out. do you know how many plugs this engine has? thanks everyone....

Re: volvo 4 cylinder,is it worth it?

Yes 50/50 antifreeze in the closed system. Leave that alone. but check that the mixture is good to -40. check that at the expansion tank.

You just need to make sure the raw water system is drained of water. Some fill it with antifreeze the way you describe.

Go to this link and download an owners manual.

type in aq125a in the "engine type" box and download the owners manual. If you're unsure of anything, let us know.

Also go to the adult only thread and go to the volvo info and download the manuals for the 125 and 270 outdrive.:)

Look for a tag, down low on the port/left side of the engine by the starter. There may be a small tag rivited on the block.

Look in the manuals I mentioned, there are pics in there.

engine id is 7858008487 is this a aq12b or a also noted that there doesn't appear to be any engine mounts. then engine appears to be just floating in mid air. is that normal?

Yes it's normal. Check over the transom well. A rotten transom in your case could be very bad.

Did you look for a small tag down by the starter yet. That would say 125a or 125b. tags are hard to spot but they are usually there.

Re: volvo 4 cylinder,is it worth it?

thats where i got these numbers from, although i didn't notice it saying aq125a or b. i looked a the transom pretty well when i got the boat, its not in bad shape at all. still seems pretty solid. i don't think the boat was kept in the water for any period of time ever. i doesn't have the telltale signs like any scale on the hull or the outdrive. i'll look again at the tag the next time i'm there though.
