Volvo 4.3gl timing help needed

Hi Guys,

Need a bit of help, this is my first post here so hello and sorry if i'm in the wrong section or anything like that.

I have a 1996 wellcraft 21 excel cuddy powered with a volvo 4.3GL PNCS engine number 4110136898

I am getting a bit confused about what horse power i have and what timing i should set the ignition to.

The dealer i bought the boat from tells me it is 190hp and checking the wellcraft site it says this model had 190hp but the manual i have says a 1996 model engine is only 170hp the engine has vortex on the rockers, i have read that some of the early vortex engines can have vortex on the heads but not be a true vortex engine. i am guessing i have a poor manual which make me a bit worried about using the setting from it to set the timing.

I have the shunt tool and instructions on how to use it it connect to +feed after engine is started.

I have read some great posts here and used many tips and hope someone can help with my questions.
I am in Scotland so i run 95 ron gas.

Volvo says it's a 190 hp for that SN. Just punch in your SN at the link below for info on that engine.

Exactly which service manual do you have? The OEM or aftermarket.

One other question, does your engine have the cast aluminum oil pan, or stamped steel? Makes a difference on the timing.

The oil pan is aluminum. the manual i have is an aftermarket one i bought on line so probably not that good.

Here is a link to the OEM manuals for your NC model engine and drive. You won't need the EFI or Ford manual, but download the others.

If you look at the Fuel/Ignition manual, there are tuneup specs with what you should be setting your timing at. I could probably tell you what the timing should be, but I would bet you learn more by looking for it.
