Can the coupler make this noise?
Not if the drive is off. If that video was shot with the drive off I would start with the drive belts on the front take them off run it a short time see if it goes away.

How old is your boat? I had a similar sound on an old boat, that turned out to be rotten stringers/ engine mounts. The lag bolts were loose and the engine mount was slapping the glass fiber stringer covering. Hope that your issue is not that, but check the mount bolts just in case.

Kinda sounds like a timing chain slap to me. Get a stethoscope or a long screwdriver, ratchet extension run the engine and carefully listen to the timing chain cover, wouldn't be the first 4.3 with that issue

Well then your looking at pulling the engine to inspect the coupler. I would do a lot of double checking before I did that like listen to the area of the block on the back half of the motor and pull the drive and run it(you can adapt a hose to the fresh water intake hose) It would also be nice to now years and codes for that motor and if it has a balance shaft

So managed to get a free moment. Took Scott06 & cptbill advice & poked around the back of the motor and it might be the exhaust flapper inside the exhaust. It sounds pretty loud when I hold the stethoscope on the left side below the bellows...right side not the same sound. As I worked my way up the exhaust there was no sound. Could this be the culprit ? Has anyone heard of this before? Ill keep looking.

What year is this motor? Volvo stopped putting exhaust flappers in around 1999? What is your full model number?

Yea, if it has exhaust flaps they might be bouncing around or rusted off. Like bruceb58 asked what year is it

Hello Sorry haven't had time to Post, managed to find the culprit, it was a loose exhaust flapper. Thank you too all who helped out.
