vOLVO 270 OUTDRIVE - Water not flowing

When I put the muffs on my outdrive water will not flow to the water pump. If I connect my hose from the water pump end of the hose, water will pour out of the outdrive (lower unit, what have you). Is there a flap in there or something that may have been installed backwards or something?

My water pump is in good shape, I currently have a water pick-up on the underside of my hull to bring in water, but I want to get rid of this setup since it's leaking water and I'm sure it's reducing my speed a bit in the water.

There's a plastic part on the drive that fails and allows the sea water pump to suck air when the boat is on muffs.

I am pretty sure it's part number 11 on this drawing:

Did you plug the secondary water pick up at the front of the drive near the bullet?

Re: vOLVO 270 OUTDRIVE - Water not flowing

I had a similar problem part #11 in the diagram and/or the gasket #29 or the #28 was the problem. Only way to diagnose it I found was to run suction from the H/E -that is the connector leading to the H/E -and put something like shaving cream at all the joints between there and the outdrive as well as on the outdrive itself wherever you see a pivot point (and there are several). The suction used was a shop vac but you could use anything like that. My idea was to see and hear where the air was being sucked into the system where it should not be! Worked great and I could then replace the washer or bushing that was the culprit. Those bushings between the different parts of the outdrive are a real pain to get to without taking the entire thing apart but it can be done.

good luck,

Joe

Bruce - I did plug the pickup at the bottom, just in front of the skeg. Is that the inlet you mean?

Yes..it is.

Also can do the DonS trick and put a clear plastic hose between the raw water pump and the hose feeding the pump and look for air in there.

Basically that clear plastic hose will tell you if air is being sucked into that raw water system but you still have to diagnose where it is entering using some vacuum like I described.

I had a mechanic shoot dye under pressure through that raw water system and couldn't find the leak, but the vacuum showed it very clearly.

The problem isn't item 11 in that picture, 11 is nothing more than a steering bushing.
What usually happens is either the gasket (item 29) leaks or most likely the aluminum hose connection (item 28) corrodes where the hose attaches and the pump sucks air when trying to run on muffs.
On newer drives that part was changed to plastic, but it's not a part that can be used on the older drives.
Pull the hose off and inspect the surface the hose attaches to.

Hey we just had the same problem and the impeller in the water pump was shot and our water pump was made of plastic-- we replaced the pump by having a machine shop build one of aluminum and put a new impeller in and all is well. Good luck

So you must have esp as well- I didn't know he ever figured it out, just trying to help in case he had not. Is there a time frame to this? Thought you might know!

I don't have ESP and if you happen to read any of the original posters recent threads, his boat has been working as of a couple weeks ago.

While we are on the subject, what Volvo water pump is made out of plastic? That is the first I have ever heard of this.

the older models had them-you should know that, I would think.

I've been a Volvo tech for years and have never seen a plastic pump on them.

I'm not sure why I am getting a hard time, but I assure you I know what I had.

Let's see a picture. I am very curious about what you had.

Re: vOLVO 270 OUTDRIVE - Water not flowing

WOW! I forgot about this thread. I never fixed the problem, I just continued using the feed coming up through the bottom of my boat.

I never thought about checking item (28) or (29) in the posted diagram. Thanks Don, I'll take a look at that. Is there a way to check (24) without disassembling the drive?

My water pump isn't plastic, it's brass with a rubber impeller. Is there a plastic after market pump?
