Voltage Regulator

1997 30hp Merc. At first it was intermittent where the voltmeter would bury over 16 volts rather than the usual 13 or so volts. When I drove it to the haul out ramp it stayed burried. ( did check at battery with volt meter and it was 16 or so volts). Checked under the cowling and the voltage regulator was black in the center and actually melted a small hole. Found a new one, is it easy to install ( electrical connections ) and is there something else I should be looking at that could have caused it.

Burning up a voltage regulator is typically associated with battery or wiring issues.
Corroded and or loose battery terminals are the usual suspects but a dead or dying battery can kill a regulator as well.
