voltage reading with no battery?

25' Boston Whaler Revenge. Repowered with twin 2001 135hp Johnsons. With battery select switch in Off, stbd engine voltage indicator reads 12v when the ignitions switch is turned to on. With battery select switch in "1" "both" or "2", indicator reads 20v (may be higher, as it looks like the indicator is at max.)

Engines both start and run fine.

It "appears" as if the indicator is reading 12v when there is no voltage coming from the battery select switch. Is there a zeroing adjustment for the indicator like there is on a multimeter?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Its not coherrent enough as written.

Is engine running or off when testing?

What is indicator? a guage on the dash?
A handheld meter?

What are you trying to accomplish?
What is the actual problem if they start and run good?

What does the volt meter read when everything is switched off. If it is an adjustment problem it will read 12 then as well.
If it reads zero when everything is off but only goes to 12 when the ignition is switched on then I don't think it can be out of adjustment.

Do you have a voltmeter on the port engine? If so does that behave normally?
