When the engine is turned off and when I turn the power steering cap open fluid starts pouring out. Anyone know why this is happening? It’s a reddish fluid. When engine is running no fluid coming out. This is a Volvo penta 5.0

Seems overfull if its spilling with the engine off.

With the engine running its circulating that oil through the PS system which brings the level down slightly.

Its tough because that reservoir looks like its clocked down at a pretty good angle.

you can see it in this pic, if that is a joint venture Volvo/OMC engine they used the same brackets as the old OMC Cobra.
might want to see if you can get back in the starboard side of the engine compartment and check the P/S actuator. Leaks on older boats are common. I replaced my original 1988 unit last Sept. Not exactly a fun job, still have the original pump.
What makes it a pain is access and the 4 cotter pins from hell....had to remove the exhaust on both sides to get it done. The 2 big pins for the bolts on the starboard side are tough to get out, the 2 small ones for the cable & steering arm are mounted on the bottom of the steering arm and are just a pain to get at.
All worked out great now have feather light power steering again....

I have a 2002 vista 248 with a Volvo 5.0 and mine is positioned on an angle. Although from the picture the angle looks excessive but it could be the way the picture is taken. If the level is correct it will not pour out unless it is over full.
